The regulations place a duty on those responsible for maintenance of non-domestic premises to identify and manage asbestos-containing materials. This includes conducting asbestos surveys, maintaining an asbestos register, and implementing an asbestos management plan. For construction work, the regulations mandate that companies must determine if asbestos is present before commencing any project. If found, only licensed contractors can remove high-risk asbestos-containing materials. The regulations also emphasize the importance of training, requiring that anyone liable to disturb asbestos during their work receives the appropriate level of information, instruction, and training. These regulations have led to increased awareness and improved safety practices in the construction industry, although compliance remains an ongoing challenge, particularly for smaller firms.
